Nagaland acts on SC order, directs village-level plastic ban

Kohima, May 29 (MExN): The Nagaland government has directed all village authorities across the State to “strictly adhere to the guidelines pertaining to total ban on Single-Use Plastic,” following a Supreme Court order dated February 14, 2026, and in compliance with the Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules 2021 notified by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. The Home Department, reiterating the Urban Development Department (UDD) notification of June 17, 2019, has asked all deputy commissioners to ensure the directives are promptly disseminated to village authorities for immediate and strict compliance. All deputy commissioners have also been tasked with ensuring mandatory collection and safe disposal of banned SUP waste by village authorities, stated an update from the DIPR. The ban covers a wide range of plastic items notified under successive UDD orders. The directive consolidates prohibitions issued through four state notifications since 2018, banning items such as all plastic carry bags regardless of thickness, plastic cutlery (plates, cups, spoons, straws), Styrofoam (thermocol) decorative items, polythene, nylon, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polypropylene and polystyrene.Later notifications expanded the ban to include flex banners, boards and posters used by government agencies during functions (December 6, 2020), as well as ear buds with plastic sticks, plastic flags, candy and ice-cream sticks, wrapping films around sweet boxes, invitation cards, cigarette packets, and PVC banners thinner than 100 microns (March 11, 2022).Additionally, a November 29, 2018 notification banning packaged drinking plastic bottles below 20 litres capacity at meetings, functions, seminars, or for personal consumption remains in force.
