SAMETI promotes natural farming in Northeast

Medziphema, May 31 (MExN): The State Agricultural Management and Extension Training Institute (SAMETI) organised a three-day training programme for ATMA functionaries on the theme “Promotion of Natural Farming in NE Region” from May 28 to 30.The inaugural programme was chaired by Yezaho Swu, Deputy Project Director, SAMETI. Delivering the keynote address, Bodevi Shuya, Director of SAMETI and Principal of IETC, highlighted the importance of natural farming as a sustainable approach that works in harmony with nature through the use of local resources, organic inputs and eco-friendly practices.Shuya stated that the adoption of natural farming is essential for restoring soil health, conserving water, reducing dependence on costly chemical inputs, ensuring food security, maintaining ecological balance and producing healthier and safer food for present and future generations.The resource persons for the training included Seyievonuo, Deputy Director (Natural Farming), Directorate of Agriculture, Nagaland; Dr Bendangla Imsong, SMS/CTO, KVK Dimapur, ICAR NE Region, Nagaland Centre; Dr Alika N Zhimo, SDO (SC) and current charge DSCO Tuensang; and Dr Virosanuo Solo, Scientist (Agronomy), AICRP Department of Agronomy.The sessions covered topics such as the role and activities of the department in natural farming, core pillars and principles of natural farming, seed treatment and indigenous seed conservation, policy and implementation challenges, the role of indigenous cattle, soil and water regeneration, soil coverage and protection, nutrient cycling, soil biology, chemical and physical soil health, microbial and nutritional formulations, and integrated farming sub-systems.A hands-on demonstration on the preparation of Jeevamrut and Beejamrut was conducted by Piketo Zhimo, BRC, Dimapur, and Menovikho Keyho, BRC, Piphema Old.The training concluded with closing remarks by Bodevi Shuya and the distribution of certificates to the participants.
