Mumbai, May 30, 2026 - Compressed natural gas (CNG) prices in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) have increased after Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) raised prices by Rs 2 per kilogram. The revised rate now stands at Rs 86 per kg, effective across Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, and other areas served by the company. This is the second price hike this month, following a similar increase on May 14. MGL has also increased the rate of piped cooking gas by 50 paise per unit in MMR.The price hike is attributed to continued pressure on international energy markets and supply disruptions linked to the West Asian conflict. Petrol and diesel prices have also risen in recent weeks due to higher global crude oil prices. In Mumbai, petrol prices stood at Rs 111.21 per litre, while diesel prices were at Rs 97.83 per litre. The Central government has directed state-run fuel retailers to strengthen liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) reserves to ensure adequate supplies. Public sector oil companies are absorbing losses on the sale of petrol, diesel, and LPG, amounting to Rs 550 crore per day, to protect domestic consumers. The government has already cut petrol and diesel excise by Rs 10 per litre on March 27, 2026, resulting in a relatively lower increase in Indian retail prices compared to neighbouring economies.
